Real-Life Green Flags That Your Instagram Content is Working for Your Business
👀 Views Are Loud… But They Aren’t Everything
In my content strategy work with small business owners, I’ve heard time and time again how frustrated entrepreneurs can get with the Instagram algorithm.
It’s never fun to spend hours on a post, pouring your heart into every word, only to have it flatline after what feels like just a handful of views.
It’s totally okay to want your posts to reach more people – but, the truth is, posts with lower views can still work hard for your business.
I know firsthand that just “trusting the long game” can get exhausting over time. Which is why I consistently go back to what I refer to as real-life metrics: evidence online and offline that proves your content is getting results for your business.
🔎 The Three Types of Evidence I Look For
It can be hard to break the habit of checking views as a measurement of success, but they are truly only one side of the story… and there are plenty of other metrics that signal that your content is working (even though Instagram loves to put views front and center).
When I think of real-life metrics, they typically fall into three categories: online evidence, offline evidence, and internal evidence.
🤳 Online Evidence: Deeper Signals on Instagram
I still count Instagram metrics as real-world evidence that your content is working, because they paint a picture of how your posts are resonating with real people.
But looking at Instagram metrics through a real-life lens often means redefining expectations – shifting from hoping for virality, to evidence that posts are reaching the right people (and not necessarily all the people).
Here are a few things I look for when it comes to measuring success through Instagram metrics:
A sale, booking, or inquiry comes directly from Instagram, either through your DMs or website clicks.
A post attracts one or more new followers who truly fit your ideal client profile… even if they’re not ready to buy yet.
You’re seeing intentional, thoughtful conversations happening in your DMs and through Story replies.
You notice a few shares and saves on posts, even if people aren’t necessarily liking or commenting.
🤝 Offline Evidence: What Doesn’t Show Up in the Feed
For small business owners, the magic of social media is often found in the way an online presence translates to the real world.
Entrepreneurs work so hard in the day-to-day – working directly with clients and customers, driving around town to meetings, and tackling to-do lists that always grow… no matter how many tasks get checked off along the way.
Running social media in the meantime doesn’t have to feel like an entirely separate work task. An online presence can support and strengthen real-world client work and business goals.
Here are a few offline signals that your content is translating from the internet to the real world:
When you meet a new client in person, they say that they feel like they already know you through following you online.
You’re offered speaking gigs or podcast opportunities because of the value you share in your content.
Someone says they “think of you first” when a problem that you help solve comes up.
Your current customer or client relationships feel sustained and strengthened through online interactions.
During an in-person conversation, someone references something you shared online that stuck with them (or made them smile).
🌿 Internal Evidence: Because the Way It Feels Matters Too
I truly believe it’s possible for business owners who run their own social media to see real results for their business through their content.
And I believe that to do that sustainably – and keep showing up week after week without burning out – mindset matters just as much as the posts you share.
Here are some internal signs that your online presence is serving your business, and that you can sustain it for the long run:
You’re excited before sharing a post because it reflects the heart of your brand and feels like an authentic extension of who you are.
You know that taking a break or pause from social media when you need to isn’t going to derail your business success.
If you start comparing your posts to another entrepreneur’s, you can remind yourself that everyone’s journey is unique.
You keep looking at something you’ve shared recently – not because you’re refreshing the views, but because you’re happy about how it represents your brand.
💛 You’re Doing Better Than You Think
If you feel like none of this evidence is coming from your online presence yet, that’s okay.
When I work with small business clients on Instagram strategy, they rarely need to send their current approach to the shredder. Most of the time, a few tweaks, tips, or reminders help them get inspired and move in the right direction.
